Hi, I’m Aprella Godfrey Barule. I am an actor and writer based in New York City.
My love for experiencing and telling stories about the strange, beautiful mess of humanity led me to leave my small hometown in Alabama right after high school to explore the world.
My first stop was Anchorage, Alaska, where I spent a year getting by on the bare essentials and came away with lessons I still carry with me. From there, I kept moving, choosing real-world experience over a classroom, listening closely to the lives of those I met along the way. Those stories, and the journey itself, eventually became the foundation for the performances I create. Sharing hard-won truths from unexpected places is my passion.
Early in my career, I created a character called The Broken Ballerina, which I performed on six world tours and then went on to become a short film. That work was later recognized by Sundance TV as one of their “Top Ten to Watch.”
Most recently, I appeared in American Rot at La MaMa, directed by Oscar winner and four-time Tony nominee Estelle Parsons, and in my own play, Just A Matter of Time, at Hudson Guild which I wrote, produced, and performed in alongside the brilliant actors Joan Porter and Dikran Tulaine.
In addition to my work as an actor and writer, I’ve had the honor of collaborating with several visual artists, including two of my favorites — David Stoupakis and Lori Earley. I’ve also walked the runway for fashion designers such as Jennifer Nicholson, Alzerina, Veritee Hill, and The Blondes and I have created performance art that has been seen on stages in New York, Miami, London, Paris, Berlin, and at the Cannes Film Festival.
Whether I’m telling stories on stage, on camera, or through movement and fashion, I’m always chasing the unexpected truth and the deeply human.
